First Morning Out Preschool

First Morning Out is an early childhood program sponsored by First Presbyterian Church of Boone.  It is a ministry to families in our congregation as well as in the greater community.  This outreach is an expression of God’s love through Jesus Christ!

First Morning Out is under the direction of nurturing teachers who are well-trained in developmentally appropriate practices for young children.  It provides an enriching and safe environment for children to grow spiritually, physically, socially, intellectually, and emotionally as they learn through play-based curriculum.

Each child is a unique creation of God and learns in an individual way.  The teachers at FMO understand these differences and respect them.  They offer a program that values each child’s world.  Each class is small to provide personal, one-on-one attention, and each has a lead and assistant teacher.
First Morning Out has been blessed with caring, committed teachers throughout the years, as well as the support of the congregation and the use of wonderful indoor and outdoor spaces here at First Presbyterian. We have also undergone changes from time to time involving class offerings, schedules and staffing. In the past 24 years since FMO began, what has remained constant is the commitment to offering a loving, nurturing, early childhood education program to the children and families in our community.
As Pastor Jeff shared in the newsletter several weeks ago, I am stepping away from the preschool and my role as director, now that this school year is finished, to take some time off and hopefully pursue other career interests. On behalf of the members of the Advisory Board of First Morning Out, it is with great excitement that I announce the hiring of Rebecca Pitts as the new director of FMO and Amber Kanoy as the new Financial Assistant, effective June 7, 2019. Rebecca is from Charlotte, NC and came to Boone to attend Appalachian State University for a degree in Elementary Education. She is married to Scott and has three children. Rebecca has been a teacher at FMO for nine years and has prior experience in the public schools as a fifth grade teacher. She is a licensed, NC Elementary Educator who is currently the lead teacher of our Transitional Kindergarten class. Amber is a native of Boone and also a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Child Development. She has been married to Josh for almost 19 years and has four children. Amber has been a teacher at FMO for fours years and has prior experience teaching at First Baptist Preschool. She is currently the lead teacher of our Monday-Friday Threes class. Please join me, the FMO staff and our preschool families in congratulating and supporting Rebecca and Amber as they begin serving in these new roles.
As a parent of two FMO “graduates”, First Morning Out will always remain dear to my heart. I look forward to seeing this preschool continue to evolve and strengthen as an early childhood education program in the future. I pray that the children, families and staff who continue to participate in this ministry of First Presbyterian Church will experience God’s love through FMO and share it with others.
With joy and gratitude,
Shelley Dewey
